Why dry brushing?

Dry brushing is exactly what the name says: brushing dry skin, without water or skincare products. It’s a simple ritual with roots in traditional care practices around the world, from Ayurveda to Scandinavian sauna culture. Today it’s back in modern skincare routines, and for good reason: it takes just two minutes, it feels wonderful, and your skin looks fresher straight away.

In this article you’ll learn what dry brushing does, why it works so well as a daily ritual, and how to get started.

Gentle exfoliation of dead skin cells
Your skin renews itself continuously. As it does, old skin cells stay behind on the surface, which can make your skin look dull or feel rough. Dry brushing gently lifts these cells away. The result is skin that looks and feels instantly smoother, softer and fresher.

Unlike a scrub with grains or an acid exfoliant, dry brushing is a mechanical, product-free way to exfoliate. You decide how much pressure to use, so you stay in control of how gentle it is.

A fresh, healthy-looking glow
As you brush, you’ll notice your skin warming up slightly and taking on a rosy tone. That’s because brushing stimulates the skin’s surface circulation. It gives an immediate, natural-looking glow, which is perfect in the morning when your face still looks a little tired.

A relaxing massage inspired by lymphatic drainage
Dry brushing is traditionally done with light strokes towards the lymph nodes, the same direction used in lymphatic drainage massage. On the face, that means brushing from the centre outwards and then down along the neck. Many people find this massage especially pleasant in the morning, when the face can look a bit puffy after a night’s sleep.

It’s not a medical treatment, but it is a calming, rhythmic moment that helps you wake up, both your skin and yourself.

Better prep for your skincare
Dead skin cells can form a layer on the surface of your skin. By gently brushing them away first, your serum, oil or moisturiser goes onto a smooth, clean surface. Many people find their skincare spreads more easily and feels more comfortable afterwards.

A moment just for you
Perhaps the most underrated benefit: dry brushing forces you to slow down. Two minutes, no phone, just you and your skin. Small rituals like this can make a busy morning feel calmer. At YUHI we believe that the simple moments often matter most.

Dry brushing for face and body
Dry brushing isn’t just for your face. You can use it on your:

  • Neck and décolleté: areas that are often forgotten in skincare
  • Arms and legs: for smoother-feeling skin, especially in winter
  • Stomach and back: as part of a full-body ritual before your shower
  • For your face, use a smaller, softer brush with rounded bristles. Facial skin is thinner and more sensitive than the skin on your body.

How often should you dry brush?
Start with 2–3 times a week. If your skin feels comfortable and shows no redness or irritation, you can build up to daily use. The morning is the ideal time: you start the day with fresh-looking skin and a moment of calm.

When to skip dry brushing
Dry brushing isn’t for every moment. When in doubt, check with a dermatologist first. Skip it on:

  • active acne or breakouts
  • rosacea, eczema or psoriasis
  • cuts, wounds or sunburn
  • irritated skin, or right after a chemical peel or retinol treatment

Get started with your own ritual
All you need is a good brush and two minutes. The YUHI Facial Dry Brush is designed for the face: its soft, wavy bristles follow the natural contours of your jawline and cheeks, and the crescent-shaped wooden handle sits comfortably in your hand.
